Research Advisory Council Minutes

Members Present: Beth Boehm, Tim Dowling, Pam Feldhoff, Susan Galandiuk, Stephan Gohmann, Chakram Jayanthi, Carolyn Mervis, Heywood Petry, Jill Suttles, Roland Valdes, Russell Weaver

° Two CEG applicants were considered. One was approved, the second was referred back to the applicant and chair for suggested changes and resubmission.

° Information Items:

1. Chemicals of Interest. --Reporting deadline was very well attended to. U of L not needing to complete the “Top Screen”. This level of reporting would have been a major time consumption.

2. Federal Grants and contracts F&A agreement.
-- Research 48% on-campus, 26% off campus.
-- Instruction 41.1% on campus, 26% off campus.

3. Gates Foundation; new round of funding.

4. NIH requirement for deposit of journal articles.
-- Many problems and concerns with this from researchers (version deposited may not be the version submitted), libraries and publishers.

5. SROP funding, invitations and reminders.

6. Kentucky Academy of Science. -- (Nancy Martin is President-elect.) U of L is their first “enhanced” affiliate. Go to their website and register to obtain member benefits.

7. 2008-2010 Capital Budget Request Agency Bond Priorities.
-- Top three are: (1) Construction of HSC Research III, (2) Construction HSC Parking Structure II, (3) Renovate Medical Dental Research Building.

8. U of K’s invitation to discussion of transition from NIH to CTSAs.

9. Clinical Investigator Lifeline. -- (Attached)

10. New Pulmonary Hypertension program.

11. Phase II Award, PGXL Laboratories. -- Dr. Kristen Reynolds, recent postdoc grad from Clinical Chemistry Fellowship Program is the named PI for for the Phase I and Phase II awards.

12. Dr. Wang’s article, MMChips. -- http://www.genengnews.com/articles/

13. BSL3 Colloquium May 12-13. -- Biosafety lab researchers, vendors, clients, etc.

14. CODRE -- (three $1,000 grants) and SPIGGS --(one $1,000 grant)grants to grad students.

15. Increase in grad students/postdocs in Science/Engineering.
-- U of L Science and Engineering postdocs 137 in 2005, 148 in 2006 and 145 in 2007.
-- Non-faculty research staff (with doctorates) increases: 109 in 2005, 123 in 2006, 129 in 2007.

° Other Business: Jill Suttles initiated discussion on the time consumption of information to IBC.
