Research Advisory Council Minutes

Members Present: Martinez, Feldhoff, Boehm, Cohn, Dowling, Dugatkin, Gohmann, Lederer, Mervis, Petry, Valdes.
No CEG applications were submitted for May 2008.
1. Research related goals for academic units.
(Score cards are the requested reporting tool for all academic units. Dr. Martinez asks for input
from committee members by the end of June for metrics that may be used to measure research in your
areas’ endeavors. Please consider metrics that are translatable across schools and departments.)
2. a. Post Doc’s survey results from George Mason University.
(2.a. Copy requested and emailed to members 5-22-08.)
b. Post doc’s employment policies: hiring restrictions, posting
requirements, interviewing others in cue, etc
(2.b.if the person is already chosen, you need not go through
posting the position and the interview process.)
3. Late proposal database. (Use of only 5 days after submissions to correct mistakes in proposals.) (Committee members are interested in having a unit-by-unit report sent out.)
4. Budget: state appropriations. (Consideration of the loss in real dollars from 2002-2008 was also reported.)
5. AAMC: Report on IT (for U of L, there is the commitment from KET and the pledge from the Office of the EVPR along with their budgeted funding.)
6. Intellectual property “ambassador”. (Federal position proposed for an intellectual property enforcement representative that would have the rank of “ambassador”.)
7. Keck Foundation Proposal. (U of L was granted permission to submit an abstract on host-pathogen research.)
8. Drs. Feldhoff award. (NSF award announcement for Drs. Pamela and Richard Feldhoff.)
9. Center for Environmental Genomics and Integrative Biology awards to:

10. Posting of the announcement for the Chair of the Department of Medicine.
New Business:
Research Advisory Council needs representation from both the School of Public Health and Information
Sciences and the School of Nursing.
B4B Gift agreement language is so specific that it is difficult to make use of the money. Matching it to people/projects at the university requires substantial time intervals.
