PREFACE This book is the University of Louisvilles record of research and creative activities for 2005 which is measured by scholarly publications and by participation in professional endeavors. Every effort has been made to insure the completeness of this information which was provided to the Office of the Senior Vice President for Research by the Departments, Schools and Colleges of the University. I would like to thank everyone who assisted in obtaining the data for this publication.

Message from the Senior Vice President for Research As I look through this report I realize how much the University of Louisville has changed since we embarked on our strategic plan, the Challenge for Excellence. We set out to grow the research enterprise with the goal of becoming a preeminent metropolitan research university. It is clear that The University of Louisville is providing students with advantages that come from attending a research university. Faculty who engage in scholarly activities and contribute new knowledge to their fields stay current and bring fresh, up to date ideas and concepts to the classroom. Undergraduate research opportunities provide venues for hands on learning and the efforts of student in art studios, laboratories, and concert halls are evident across campus. Faculty student interactions contribute to the intellectual excitement that leads to this compendium of research activities. Use this compendium to learn about the work of your colleagues and to look for connections that might lead to new collaborations. We have made this compendium searchable so you can use it to forge new relationships and so those who are not members of the U of L family can use it as a window to create partnerships as well. The work reflected in these pages makes it clear that we are meeting the Challenge and that is cause for celebration. Nancy C. Martin
