Particularly Hazardous Substance Chemical SOPs

The OSHA Laboratory Standard requires a written SOP for any chemical that is classified as a particularly hazardous substance (PHS). A PHS chemical meets any of the following criteria:

  • Acute (highly) toxic (LD50 (oral rat) ≤ 50 mg/kg
  • Carcinogen (IARC Group 1, 2A, 2B and NTP Known Human Carcinogen or Reasonably Anticipated Human Carcinogen (RAHC)) and Mutagen
  • Reproductive Toxicant
  • High Physical Hazard (i.e. air or water reactive, potential for high explosivity, hazardous compressed gas)

DEHS has created a Particularly Hazardous Substance Guide for research personnel to use to help determine if the chemical they will use is classified as a PHS chemical. Lab personnel will need to have the supplier’s chemical safety data sheet (SDS) available for specific chemical to make properly make this assessment. As follows are DEHS SOP blanket templates. Lab personnel can use one template to cover several PHS chemicals that meet the specific PHS criteria. For example, if your lab has multiple chemicals that meet the PHS criteria for Acutely Toxic, you can use Acutely Toxic blanket template, and list all acutely toxic chemicals in Section 1 of the template.

SOP completion and document management can be done as follows:

  • The SOPs are acceptable after completing Section 1 (list applicable chemicals and specific hazard info) and Section 8 (lab working principle for each chemical listed)
  • Lab personnel must review, sign, and date the SOP prior to work with the applicable chemicals.
  • Upload the completed SOP into the PI lab SciShield account, under the Documents tab.
  • The Chemical Hygiene Plan and associated SOPs are required to be reviewed annually and updated as necessary
