About Us

Who We Are

The Department of Environmental Health and Safety (DEHS) is a dedicated team of over 20 highly skilled and problem-solving environmental health safety professionals who are passionate about serving our customers and supporting UofL’s teaching, research and service missions. With a combined experience of nearly 400 years, our team brings deep expertise and institutional knowledge to all aspects of safety and compliance. 

Our professionals hold nationally recognized credentials including Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Biological Safety Professional (CBSP), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) and Diplomate of the American Board of Radiology (DABR) – reflecting our commitment to excellence and leadership in the EHS field. Two of our staff members hold gratis faculty appointments – one in SPHIS and the other in Radiation Oncology and several have advanced degrees in molecular biology, engineering, physics, and occupational safety and health.

What We Do

DEHS supports the university’s mission through proactive risk management, regulatory compliance assistance, training and consultation services across a broad spectrum of EHS disciplines. Whether managing hazardous materials, ensuring laboratory safety, overseeing radiation protection or promoting occupational health, our team works collaboratively to protect the UofL community and the environment.
