Euthanasia
Sidebar
Policy Info: Effective February 1, 2019, All laboratory personnel responsible for euthanasia must attend a hands-on euthanasia training session with Comparative Medicine Research Unit (CMRU) faculty and staff or a CMRU-certified euthanasia trainer. The University Committee for Animal Welfare (UCAW) is offering the opportunity for key laboratory personnel to become CMRU-certified euthanasia trainers and train individuals within their lab. Lab personnel wanting to become CMRU-certified euthanasia trainers must attend a hands-on euthanasia trainer certification course with CMRU vet staff. All new proposals, 3-year renewal proposals, and study participant additions will be subject to this euthanasia training requirement. Further information is available in the UCAW policy, Required Training [PDF].
CMRU-certified euthanasia trainers should document any training sessions they conduct with the Euthanasia Training Sign-In Sheet [PDF] and promptly email the UCAW office after the sessions with the sign-in sheet of participants and species-specific methods of euthanasia taught.
Individuals must also complete occupational health and safety enrollment CITI course, the health survey and be an approved project participant on a UCAW proposal (or pending approval) before attending this course.
The IACUC policy, "Euthanasia of Research Animals," clearly states the acceptable methods and considerations for euthanasia of different species. It is recommended that all animal users familiarize themselves with the policy.
Laboratory personnel should also review the following guidelines for the euthanasia of rodents utilizing CO2:
Guidelines for the Humane Euthanasia of ADULT Rodents Utilizing CO2
Guidelines for the Humane Euthanasia of NEONATAL Rodents Utilizing CO2
Euthanasia Training
The CMRU offers euthanasia training on mice or rats twice monthly as part of their Basic Rodent Biomethodology Course, as well as on an individualized basis. If interested in other training dates for the euthanasia course, please contact the UCAW office.
All courses are scheduled in the Research Resources Center Vivarium (Bldg. 57). Participants should meet at the entrance of the Vivarium for escort. The hands-on euthanasia training is the last approximately 30 minutes of the Biomethodology course.
CMRU-Certified Euthanasia Training
The certified euthanasia trainer course is available to personnel with extensive rodent experience upon request. Certified Trainers will be scheduled in the Medical Dental Research Building Room 012 (MDR 012) to begin the classroom portion. The euthanasia trainer certification course lasts approximately 1 hour (30 minutes of classroom and 30 minutes of hands-on training).
NOTE: Laboratory personnel who complete the CMRU-certified euthanasia trainer course will have fulfilled the hands-on euthanasia training requirement and do not need to also take the euthanasia course.
