Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity is a fundamental part of protecting the integrity, confidentiality, and reliability of university research.

As part of the University of Louisville’s Research ’s Security Program, all faculty, researchers, and staff involved in sponsored research are expected to follow established cybersecurity practices that align with university policies, federal guidance, including the National Security Presidential Memorandum - 33 (NSPM- 33).

Why It Matters

Universities are frequent targets of cyberattacks aimed at accessing sensitive research data, intellectual property, and federally funded innovations. Protecting this information is not only a matter of institutional integrity—it’s a requirement for continued eligibility to receive federal research funding.

Who Is Responsible?

All individuals engaged in research—especially federally funded research—share responsibility for maintaining a secure digital environment. This includes:

  • Faculty and principal investigators (PIs),
  • Research staff, postdocs, and graduate students,
  • administrative personnel supporting research activities,
  • anyone accessing or handling research data or systems.

What's Expected of you?

To support cybersecurity in research, individuals are expected to:

  • Use university-approved tools and systems for storing and sharing research data
  • Avoid using personal devices or unapproved platforms for handling sensitive information
  • Regularly update devices, software, and passwords
  • Report suspicious emails or cybersecurity incidents immediately
  • Coordinate with IT and research security personnel when traveling internationally or collaborating with foreign partners
  • Understand and follow data handling requirements outlined in grants, contracts, or compliance protocols.

Our Commitment

The University is committed to supporting researchers with the resources, guidance, and infrastructure needed to meet these expectations. By working together, we can protect the university’s research enterprise, support national security goals, and maintain our reputation as a trusted research institution.
