The University of Louisville HSPP/IRB offers a variety of education content relating to human subjects research and maintaining compliant research. These educational opportunities exist as in-person sessions, self-guided lessons, webinars, and events. Researchers are highly encouraged to attend a session and review available materials. The HSPP education staff routinely partner with other University departments, speakers, and offices to bring a wide array of educational opportunities for research teams.

Self-Guided Lessons
Professional Development Courses for Researchers and Scientists
Researchers and scientists have access to Nature Masterclasses, courtesy of a paid-for subscription through the University of Louisville. Nature Masterclasses offers online professional development training for researchers at all stages of their careers. Lessons cover a wide range of topics, including: writing a research paper, persuasive grant writing, effective science communication and creating successful research posters. The following three sessions will be available during Research!Louisville.
Serving as a Mentor for Human Subjects Research: Who, What, When, Where, and Why?
Panelists will consider what it means to serve effectively as a mentor for student (graduate, residents, fellows, etc.) led research. The session will be geared toward faculty and staff serving in these roles.
IRB Protocol Writing Workshop: Is this a Proposal or a Protocol?
Come prepared to review what constitutes a “good” protocol for human subjects research, learning from others who successfully conduct research in this local community. This session will be targeted for researchers, regulatory staff, and clinical support staff.
Navigating Investigator Initiated Human Subjects Research (Without a Sponsor’s Safety Net)
This panel discussion will touch on diverse areas supporting human subjects research. Panelists will include representatives from the HSPPO (covering clinicaltrials.gov, iRIS, compliance, etc.), the local IRB, local healthcare facilities, the UofL Privacy Office, UofL Legal, UofL Libraries, and more. You’ll walk away with details about how these offices support the efforts of researches, regulatory staff, and clinical support staff.

Topic: Research Data Management: Overview, Best Practices, and Resources
Details: Dani will cover what data management is, what FAIR data is and why it is important, and give an overview of both the UofL Management & Sharing of Research Data Policy and the NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy. She will then go into more detail on what data management plans are and what should be included, as well as data repositories and considerations for choosing one for your research project. The presentation will close with available resources and time for questions.

SPEAKER: Dr. Laura Weingartner, PhD, MS, Director of Research, Health Professions Education
Topic: Minimal Risk Research: Tips from an Investigator for Anyone Submitting to the IRB
Details: Designed for those conducting minimal risk educational, survey, or interview projects. We’ll share resources from the perspective of an investigator on how to structure IRB proposals and obtaining participant consent. The session will help investigators differentiate between educational research and curriculum evaluation.

Topic: Overcoming Language Barriers in Human SubjectsResearch
Details: We will discuss research regulations and policies that apply when enrolling research participants who speak languages other than English. We'll also discuss local considerations and resources for translation and interpreter services. Representatives from UofL Health and Norton Healthcare Research offices will speak on hospital resources/processes for needing translations and/or interpreter services.
