Built for ambitious research

Investigators at UofL have access to a broad range of core facilities spanning the biomedical sciences, engineering and other disciplines.

Core facilities are specialized research laboratories staffed by skilled, dedicated scientific personnel and equipped with sophisticated instrumentation, providing researchers across the university with advanced research services and direct equipment access to pursue ambitious research. Many cores also welcome external users, including academic researchers and industry partners.

The strategic research infrastructure division of the Office of Research and Innovation partners with units across the university to build, coordinate and strengthen core facilities as foundational components of UofL’s research infrastructure.

Louisville Research Cores

Louisville Research Cores (LRCs) represent the premier tier of UofL core facilities, recognized for their commitment to best-in-class operations, rigorous management and responsive scientific services. LRCs function not only as service providers, but as strategic infrastructure assets that elevate UofL’s research enterprise and competitiveness.
Advanced Computing Core
The Advanced Computing Core has been formed to extend the scope of the resources and services provided by the research computing team to enable cutting-edge research at UofL and beyond.
Bioimaging Core
The Bioimaging Core provides biological electron microscopy services including sample preparation, SEM and TEM imaging, array tomography and cryo-EM plunge freezing.
Biophysical Core
The Biophysical Core supports structural biology studies by characterizing biophysical properties of biomolecules and their interactions with binding partners or drug candidates.
Cleanroom
The Cleanroom is a 10,000 square foot cleanroom facility providing nanofabrication and microfabrication equipment and services for academic and industry researchers.
Imaging and Characterization Core
The Imaging and Characterization Core provides advanced imaging and characterization capabilities including SEM, AFM and infrared thermal microscopy supporting research in engineering, materials science, biology and more.
Medicinal Chemistry Core
The Medicinal Chemistry Core provides medicinal and organic chemistry support for drug discovery, specializing in lead optimization and synthesis of compound libraries.
Molecular Modeling Core
The Molecular Modeling Core provides computational biology services including molecular dynamics simulations, drug screening and docking, biophysical calculations and figure generation.
NMR Spectroscopy Core
The NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) Spectroscopy Core provides access to high-field NMR instrumentation, expert technical support and data analysis services for biomolecular structure, dynamics and metabolomics studies.
Protein Expression and Purification Core
The Protein Expression and Purification Core provides purified proteins through expression optimization, large-scale expression, isotopic labeling and protein refolding services.
Proteomics Technology Center
The Proteomics Technology Center provides comprehensive proteomic analyses using LC-MS platforms, supporting post-translational modifications, protein-protein interactions, spatial proteomics and single-cell workflows with bioinformatics.
Sequencing Technology Center
The Sequencing Technology Center provides genomics services including next-generation sequencing, single-molecule real-time sequencing and single cell/spatial transcriptomics.

Additive Manufacturing Institute of Science and Technology

The Additive Manufacturing Institute of Science and Technology (AMIST) Core provides 3D printing and prototyping services for research and manufacturing with emphasis on laser and e-beam powder bed processes for metals, plastics, and ceramics.

Bioanalytical Core

The Bioanalytical Core provides high-resolution liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry services for clinical, preclinical, and environmental studies.

Bioinformatics Core

The Bioinformatics Core (in the Brown Cancer Center) empowers cancer research by providing data analysis, computational biology, and statistical tools to help researchers navigate complex biological datasets.

Biostatistics Core

The Biostatistics Core (in the Brown Cancer Center) provides experimental design, data analysis, and statistical support for clinical trials and high-dimensional data studies.

Biostatistics & Informatics Core Facility

The Biostatistics and Informatics Core (in the Center for Integrative Environmental Health Sciences, CIEHS) provides biostatistics, bioinformatics, and multi-omics data integration for environmental health research, including study design and investigator training.

Center for Predictive Medicine Shared Resource

The Center for Predictive Medicine (CPM) Shared Resource provides BSL2 and BSL3 biocontainment facilities for pathogen research, offering microbiology, immunology, and bio-imaging services to support in vivo and in vitro studies.

Center for Regulatory and Environmental Analytical Metabolomics

Center for Regulatory and Environmental Analytical Metabolomics (CREAM) provides metabolomics, lipidomics, and epitranscriptomics services using advanced mass spectrometry platforms including LC-MS, GC-MS, and stable isotope resolved metabolomics.

Clinical Trials Unit

The Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) is a central research unit that provides services to investigators, sponsors, and research staff conducting clinical research trials.

Data Science and Bioinformatics Core

The Data Science and Bioinformatics Core (in KY INBRE) offers fee-based high-throughput sequencing analysis services with expertise in computational and wetlab approaches.

Exposures and Toxicology Core

The Exposures and Toxicology Core provides access to controlled inhalation exposure experiments using a range of toxicant aerosols and gases, along with physiological monitoring.

Flow Cytometry Core

The Health Sciences Center (HSC) Flow Cytometry Core provides flow cytometry training, data acquisition, and multi-parameter cell sorting services.

Functional Immunomics Core

The Functional Immunomics Core provides CyTOF mass cytometry for high-parameter single-cell analysis, Hyperion imaging mass cytometry for spatial tissue profiling, and cell sorting with biological containment capabilities.

Functional Microbiomics Core

The Functional Microbiomics Core is an integrated resource for microbiome research, providing germ-free and gnotobiotic mouse facilities, metagenomic sequencing with bioinformatics, and inflammatory-marker and histopathology analysis.

Genomics Training and Education Center

The Genomics Training and Education Center (GTEC) provides genomics training, workshops, access to instrumentation, and support for data analysis and interpretation to help researchers, staff, and students develop genomics research skills and expertise.

In Vivo Molecular Imaging Facility

The In Vivo Molecular Imaging Facility provides comprehensive non-invasive imaging of small animals using optical, MRI, PET, and CT modalities to support research across disease models.

Magnetic Resonance Research Facility

The Magnetic Resonance Research Facility is equipped with a research-dedicated Siemens 3T MRI system supporting neuroimaging and functional MRI.

Materials & Energy Technology Service Center

The Materials and Energy Technology Service Center provides comprehensive materials characterization using microscopy, spectroscopy, and diffraction tools for inorganic and soft materials, supporting academic and industry research.

Metabolic Profiling Core

The Metabolic Profiling Core provides flow cytometry, extracellular flux analysis, whole animal metabolic profiling, and polyunsaturated fatty acid metabolism analysis.

Metallomics Core

The Metallomics Core provides inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) analysis for multiple metals in clinical, animal, environmental, and food samples.

Microscopy & Pathology Core

The Microscopy & Pathology Core provides confocal/multiphoton microscopy, automated fluorescence imaging, AFM nanomechanics, and complete pathology workflows with expert support for experimental design, training, and analysis.

Statistical Consulting Service

The Statistical Consulting Service provides biostatistical expertise for research support, including experimental design, power and sample size calculation, data management, statistical analysis and modeling, and technical report writing.

Systems Physiology & Phenotyping Core

The Systems Physiology & Phenotyping Core provides in vivo animal surgeries and cardiovascular models with ultrasound imaging, invasive hemodynamics, electrophysiology, radiotelemetry, and metabolic phenotyping.
